Valerian Root

Valerian root has been used as a sleeping aid since the times of ancient Rome and Greece. It had several other uses also such as helping with digestive problems, anxiety, headaches, tension, and gout. The extract of the plant is taken from the root and ground up once it has been dried. It has a strong musky smell once it has been dried, which is in stark contrast to its flowers that are commonly used as perfumes.

What is Amberen? It is a fairly new natural product marketed to help reduce the effects of menopause. According to the official website Amberen is said to be able to reduce symptoms such as Hot Flashes, Night Sweats, Weight Gain, Low Libido, Fatigue, and Migraines.

Whether or not Amberen is able to accomplish this is yet to be seen. From looking at consumer reviews and looking at the formula of Amberen it looks like the product may have some benefits for women going through menopause but whether or not the product is worth the $100 dollar price tag does not seem likely. What Is GABA?

GABA is a neurotransmitter that provides several different roles in the human body. Most notably GABA is directly responsible for helping with the relaxation of muscles. During REM sleep our muscles are at their most relaxed state, this is caused by the inhibitory actions of GABA on the central nervous system. This is one of the reasons why GABA is found in Sleeping pills. Studies have found that when the compound is ingested and released into the blood stream there is an increased reaction to the synapses which helps relax the muscles.

These results are great news for people who have restlessness at night when trying to get to sleep. With the relaxation of the muscles there is an increase in melatonin along with an increase in REM sleep.
