Valerian Root
Valerian root has been used as a sleeping aid since the times of ancient Rome and Greece. It had several other uses also such as helping with digestive problems, anxiety, headaches, tension, and gout. The extract of the plant is taken from the root and ground up once it has been dried. It has a strong musky smell once it has been dried, which is in stark contrast to its flowers that are commonly used as perfumes.
Its mode of action is uncertain but it is thought that some of the compounds in Valerian Root are able to interact with the GABA neurotransmitter receptor system similar to benzodiazepines.
